August 2008 Galleries

August 24-31, 2008 : Various August -- Atlas Tack.  Very pale Red-tailed hawk.  No more views of Night Herons.  Goldfinches all over thistle.  Choppers.
August 24 -- West Island.  Whimbrel and cooperative Least Sandpipers at Town Beach. 
August 31 - Went with Kay to West Island State (north).  Nothing unusual, except entertaining feeding frenzies.  Three Laughing Gulls fighting over a fish just over our heads, almost dropped their prey on Kay.  Pirates tried to take fish from cormorants.

August 20, 2008 : One adult (hidden in the trees) Black-crowned Night Heron and 4 juveniles.  Went back at dusk and saw the adult hunting in the marsh.

August 17, 2008 : West Island town beach....Funny goose still there.  Not as many swallows and hardly any terns.  One Piping Plover (didn't see it last time).  
Hacker Street....startled a beautiful Green Heron who let me take many pics
Egypt Lane...Crows fighting with a pair of beautiful hawks (Cooper's???) whose plumage was very bright.  They scared up some Black-crowned Night Herons - 2 juvies and one adult.
Kingfisher was around a lot.

August 4, 2008 : At Egypt Lane at lunch time, saw these Eastern Kingbirds.  The big baby was very vociferous and the parent alternated between totally ignoring the baby and flying off and getting grasshoppers for it.  The baby got all excited when the parent returned, but since the grasshoppers were huge, it took a while for the parent to finally kill the prey and stuff it into the baby.

Nice Black Swallowtail butterfly took over a thistle plant.  I was trying to get a picture of a goldfinch on the plant, but it flew away.
