January 1, 2006 : Light snow, temps around freezing. Bad light for photos. First stop-bike path at Egypt Lane. 2 Catbirds, several song sparrows, 1 Carolina wren and Yellow-Breasted Chat. Next to Little Bay Conservation - 1 Brown Creeper, many song/savannah sparrows, lots of tree sparrows, g-c kinglets and chickadees. Lots of mallards at Pierces Point road. Buffleheads. Sandy Beach - Hooded Mergansers Winsegansett - Canada Geese, Herring Gulls, Ring-Bills (NO horned larks); GB Heron Hacker Street - gulls, one eider

January 29, 2006 : Egypt Lane--catbirds, mockingbirds, Song Sparrows, Cardinals, Carolina Wrens. Peregrine Falcon carrying then eating something dove-sized. Crows keeping watch. Weeden Road--Mallards, Kingfisher (heard), Great Blue Heron, half a dozen Golden-crowned Kinglets, 2 Yellow-rumped Warblers. Pierce's Point - Peregrine Falcon with pile of feathers under pole. Shaw Road-towhees and Carolina Wrens YMCA-Mattapoisett--Bufflehead, Canada Geese Tinkham Pond--Hooded Mergansers

January 25, 2006 : Palmer's Island & Mattapoisett YMCA. Snow/rain early, then sun and clouds....temps in high 30s. Palmer's Island at low tide but still waded in water over my knee-high rubber boots. Saw Barrow's and Common Goldeneyes, 8 crows mobbing a small hawk, mockingbird chasing a robin twice around the island, Herring and Great Black-backed Gulls, Brant, Buffleheads, Red-breasted Mergansers. The island is a mess. Saw 1 dead cormorant and 2 dead GBBG's. Went to YMCA in Mattapoisett. From the RR bridge saw Hooded Merganser, Ring-billed Gulls, Horned Grebe, Mallards, Mute Swans. At town landing across from YMCA saw Savannah Sparrow.

January 21, 2006 : Went to Shaw Road, got put off by sounds of hunters on last bird hunting day. Went to Long Road. Heard lots of wrens. At home, lots of finches. Very warm and sunny but windy.

January 19, 2006 : Peregrine Falcon on Congregational Church again. First noticed some feathers floating down in the library driveway. Must have been the falcon's. It flew to the church and then to a tree on the Unitarian Church lawn.

January 15, 2006 : Went to Tamarack, Assawompsett School and White Bank to look for eagles. Saw a few kinglets (sp?). Bitter cold and snow flurries. In Rochester on the way back, noticed a large bird in a yard. Turned out to be a fantastic Red-shouldered Hawk.

January 11, 2006 : Lunchtime went to Winsegansett. Lots of gulls, incl. Great Black Backed, and (hooray!) saw my flock of (7) Horned Larks after an absence of a couple of weeks. Near Seven Eleven saw large hawk watching marshy area. Northern Harrier, lots of ducks, RB mergs, buffleheads on pond off Saltmarsh Road. At the library chickadees were acting weird investigating the granite and the bars on the windows.

January 7 & 8 : Jan 7 Shaw Road starling; Harrier at soccer fields at Mill Rd.; flicker in Acushnet Jan 8 Marbled Godwit, Peregrine Falcon, Common Loons at Stony Point Dike. Also saw snow buntings, dunlin and a great deal of erosion from last month's blizzard-squall Sharp-shinned hawk near feeder in backyard

January 6, 2006 : Overcast, temps in 40s. Went down Gellette Road and when it curves into Shaw Rd., saw a Kestrel on the wire. At the end of the bike path at Shaw Road saw skulking Winter Wren, Catbird, Chickadees, Cardinals, Goldfinch, House Finch, Song Sparrows, Carolina Wren, Swamp Sparrow, Blue Jay. Dan Zimberlin came over to tell me about a long-eared owl at Weeden Road, but it was gone when I got there. But saw Belted Kingfisher, House Wren, Great Blue Heron, Northern Harrier. When I parked at the library, the Peregrine Falcon was back.
