April 11 - 21, 2008 : April 21-Atlas Tack. Four Savannah Sparrows. Two fighting.

Update--April 19 saw two Turkey Vultures mating on chimney of water works building on Mill Road.

April 17 - Bridge Street Kestrel; Austin Pond Gadwall

April 11, saw 5 Turkey Vultures at the Atlas Street end of the Hurricane barrier. Three flew off and two stayed on the wall until one flew into a tree. A cat walked past the one left on the wall, but both animals were studiously avoiding each other. After the cat passed, the other vulture flew down from the tree, spread his wings and did an elaborate dance , then mounted the other bird.
April 12, 13, & 14 saw two birds on top of abandoned Atlas Tack. One flew up and circled above me, giving me the evil eye.
After the 15th, when the EPA guys started working on the marsh, I didn't see them anymore. One of the EPA guys said the vultures seemed to be "dive-bombing" them.

February 23 & 24, 2008 : Feb 23--
After work went to Winsegansett. Most exciting thing was small flock of Horned Larks and 64 Titleist golf balls all over the shore. I picked them all up.
At Town Beach there was a bunch of Ruddy Turnstones
Feb 24--
Early went to Long Road. Sun was shining and water flowed in little stream attracting Robins and a small group of 6 Rusty Blackbirds. The blackbirds flew into a tree and started a concert. They all were males. I loaded a crummy video so you could hear them sing.

December 14, 2007 : Egypt Lane / bike path at noon. About 3 or 4 inches of snow on the path. Lots of White-throated Sparrows, Songs, Juncos, Cardinals. Saw this Red-shouldered Hawk in the tree. There was another one to its right further down being mobbed by crows and a third hawk calling from a tree down the road to the left. Once the crows were finished with their hawk, they turned their attention to mine and drove it away. The third one stayed calling in the tree, but I had to leave.
Also there was a Northern Flicker checking out the wreath on the Unitarian Church door!!!! Too fast for me, though.

The third picture shows the two hawks on a branch and a squirrel they just chased from the backyard. The squirrel hid under a truck, but after a while actually climbed onto a fence right near the birds and then climbed up the tree to look at them.
Also the goldfinches did not seem afraid as they usually are. One of the hawks flew right over the feeder and the goldfinches just kept eating.

The blue jays mobbed one of them and usually sit near them screeching.

April 17, 2006 : Went to Town Beach and Shipyard farm. Not much.
Winsegansett--The AMOY were at the beginning of the trail. They were making little sounds and flashing their wings once in a while. The smaller male was also looking up with its head cocked and then the female started doing it. I thought they were concerned about the osprey. But while I was trying to delete old photos from my camera, the male hopped onto the female ....then they flew off to separate rocks further out.

April 13 & 14 & 15 : April 13 at lunch at Long Road. The kingfishers weren't there when I got there, but soon the male chattered and flew to near the burrow. Never did see the female. The male sat quiet the whole 15-20 minutes I was there.

April 14--lunch. When I got there, saw a bird(?) flying over the water near the road. It was twittering and swooped down to take a drink on the fly. Then it flew around a while and went behind my car.
Went to the pond. After a couple minutes both kingfishers showed up. Male went to burrow, female sat on tree. After about 15 minutes, felt sorry as they were chattering.
When I got back to my car, the "bird" turned out to be a bat who was just lying there behind my car. It was still breathing, but I was afraid it was sick and didn't pick it up. Left the poor thing there.

April 15--very foggy in the morning. The bat was gone. The kingfishers were still there despite a very busy previous day with dogs, kids fishing and kids even riding bikes on the hill several inches above the nest. Don't know what the birds did but they were back the next morning. The male was on the tree near the hole. I moved further away and the female joined the male who then flew into the hole.

April 12, 2006 : Fabulous day. Went to Long Road in the morning. Heard a Kingfisher there (?!)...then heard another one. Sat still and watched the female wait outside while the male went in and out of a hole in the big mound of dirt. He would stay in there at least a full minute. Then when I got up they flew around a while, then gave up.
The hole had some kind of paper or other litter at the entrance.....don't know if the birds put it there.
